Passed away at his Amersham home, surrounded with love

He was an experienced and accomplished auctioneer who regularly took the rostrum, skilfully combining a spirit of theatre and fun – ensuring that the process of selling was as entertaining as it was commercially effective

He is much loved and will always be remembered by his Dear Jacqui, Daughters Pippa, Miranda & Bryony and all his family and many friends and colleagues

I first attended AAR around 1987 aged 17. My love of auctions began with watching Dick ply his trade on the rostrum. Hurrying up the bidders, telling the room to quieten down and asking the unwary attendee if they had just made a bid - when they clearly hadn’t - it always made for a lot of fun, which was Dick in a nutshell. He was always happy to answer my questions, no matter how many I had, with good humour and good advice. Dick and AAR opened up the world of auctions to me all those years ago. The internet has changed auctions immeasurably but I will always remember a packed sale room, Dick on the rostrum with Jacqui by his side, and that feeling I would get as he announced the next lot - we all know that feeling - that precious item that you just have to have and sometimes you get it for a song but more often than not you end up making “just one more bid - don’t loose it for the sake of a bid”!!! The auctioneers mantra. Those were the days of the “old school auctions” and the fact is that when it comes to auctions, “there’s no school like the old school and in Amersham, Dick Ellis was definitely the headmaster”. Thank you Dick, you were a gentleman and a scholar.

In all the years I have been attending and bidding remotely at auctions. Dick has always been in my top three auctioneers of all time. A true, fair, genuine, high tempo and energetic auctioneer from the old school of auctioneering with the ability to add humour with a theatrical flare that is difficult to replicate due to Dick’s personality, sharpe wit and immense auctioneering skill. Dick would not tolerate late bidding at the last split second. When that hammer falls, you are too late! Dick always warned bidders to keep up and get bids in time and not at the last split second. Sadly, this was a regular occurrence. Dick will always be remembered as, ‘The true Gentleman in the world of auctioneering’ My thoughts are with Dick’s family and friends

I was first introduced to the delights of Amersham Auction Rooms way back in the early 1980's, and over the intervening years I've enjoyed many wonderful conversations with Dick. Always viewed by me as a kindred spirit, I feel privileged to have known him, if only in such a limited way, and I am greatly saddened by his passing. My deepest sympathies go to his family and children, his auction room 'family', and most of all to Jacqui, who's loss has been immense.

That wonderful voice ….and charming way Dick always welcomed me with a twinkle in his eye…. making me feel important at every auction ….a true gent …life is not counted by the years you live but by the love you gave and the things you did …. Thank you Dick …

Dick offered me my very first job and I still remember the interview and his advice. Whilst I did not take up his offer at the time, it eventually lead me in the same firm and I will always be grateful for his advice. Always sincere, kindly, and putting others first, a mischievous sense of humour and a comforting smile. RIP, and my condolences to Jacqui and family.

I was so sorry to hear this news. I was a regular attendee at the auction rooms many years ago and always enjoyed the atmosphere and banter that prevailed when Dick was in charge. He was a true professional. May he rest in peace.
